1-Aminopropan-2-ol, also commonly called 1-Amino-2-propanol or Iso Propanol Amine, is a chemical compound with the formula C3H9NO. It is an amino alcohol. The term “isopropanolamine” may also refer more generally to the additional homologs diisopropanolamine (DIPA) and triisopropanolamine (TIPA). 1-Aminopropan-2-ol is one of the simplest structures that displays the property of chirality. It can exist in two enantiomeric forms that are mirror images of each other. These have the same chemical properties, except when reacting with other chiral compounds. They also have the same physical properties, except that they have opposite optical activities. The racemic mixture of the two enantiomers in equal parts differs chemically and physically from the pure enantiomers. It can be prepared by the addition of aqueous ammonia to propylene oxide.The racemic and both chiral isomers are commercially available but owing to the relative difficulty of preparing homochiral materials they are about 500 times more expensive by weight.
Application:
The isopropanolamines are basic chemicals that can be used to achieve basicity or buffering. They are good solubilizers of oil and fat, so they are used to neutralize fatty acids and sulfonic acid-based surfactants. Racemic 1-aminopropan-2-ol is typically used in metal working fluid, waterborne coating, personal care products, and in the production of titanium dioxide and polyurethanes.It is an intermediate in the synthesis of a variety of pharmaceutical drugs.
(R)-1-aminopropan-2-ol is metabolised to aminoacetone in micro-organisms by the enzyme (R)-aminopropanol dehydrogenase.
