Factories, workshops and boat yards in Umm Al Quwain use solvents every day: to thin paints and resins, clean machinery, wipe surfaces before coating and extract or dissolve raw materials. The five solvents below cover most of that work. They look similar in a drum, but they evaporate at different speeds, dissolve different things and carry different safety limits, so picking the wrong one costs money or ruins a batch.
Quick comparison
| Solvent | Typical use | Evaporation | Flash point (approx.) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Acetone | Cleaning, resin and adhesive thinning, fibreglass tool wash | Very fast | -20 C |
| Isopropyl alcohol (IPA) | Electronics and surface wipe, disinfectant base, ink and coating carrier | Fast | 12 C |
| Methyl ethyl ketone (MEK) | Strong cleaner and thinner for coatings, inks, PVC cement | Fast | -9 C |
| Toluene | Paint and lacquer thinner, rubber and adhesive solvent, chemical feedstock | Medium | 4 C |
| Methanol | Industrial cleaner, fuel and chemical intermediate, laboratory use | Fast | 11 C |
A flash point below room temperature means the liquid gives off enough vapour to ignite at normal indoor and outdoor temperatures in the UAE. Every solvent in this table should be treated as highly flammable.
Acetone: the all-round cleaner
Acetone dissolves most resins, oils and adhesives and evaporates in minutes, which is why fibreglass and boat-building shops use it to wash tools and wipe surfaces before bonding. It leaves little residue. The trade-off is that it attacks many plastics and rubber seals, so test it on a small area before using it on a finished part. We stock commercial grade acetone as well as higher purity grades.
Isopropyl alcohol: gentler and cleaner
IPA is milder than acetone and safe on more plastics. It is the usual choice for wiping electronics, cleaning glass and lenses, and as a base for disinfectant wipes and sprays. Grade matters here. Wiping and disinfecting work uses a 70 percent solution, while electronics and coating preparation normally need 99 percent or higher, because the water in a lower grade leaves marks. See our isopropyl alcohol listing and tell us the concentration you need.
MEK: when acetone is not strong enough
Methyl ethyl ketone dissolves cured inks, many coatings and PVC cement that acetone only softens. It evaporates slightly slower than acetone, which gives you a little more working time on large surfaces. It is common in printing, coating and PVC pipe work. Because it is a stronger solvent, gloves and ventilation matter more. Details are on the MEK product page.
Toluene: slower, cheaper thinning
Toluene evaporates more slowly than the ketones, so paint and lacquer thinned with it flows out and levels better. It is also used for rubber and adhesive formulations and as a raw material for other chemicals. Buyers should know that toluene has stricter exposure limits than acetone or IPA. Work in ventilated areas and follow the exposure limits on the safety data sheet. Pure toluene is available in 50 litre and 210 litre packs.
Methanol: cheap, effective and toxic
Methanol is an effective industrial cleaner and a common intermediate. It is toxic if swallowed, absorbed through skin or breathed in quantity, and it burns with a flame that is hard to see in daylight. Do not decant it into unlabelled bottles. Check that anyone who handles it understands this risk before you order drums.
How to choose
- Cleaning cured resin or ink: start with MEK, then acetone.
- Cleaning electronics, glass or food-contact equipment: IPA of the right concentration.
- Thinning paint where flow and finish matter: toluene or a blended thinner, matched to the paint maker's data sheet.
- Cost-sensitive degreasing in a ventilated yard: methanol or acetone, with the safety points above.
Packaging, grades and paperwork
Solvents are sold as commercial, technical, pure and laboratory grades, in packs from 2.5 litres to 210 litre drums. Ask for the grade by purity percentage, not just by name, and ask for the safety data sheet and certificate of analysis with the first order. Before you store more than a small working quantity, confirm the requirements for your unit with Civil Defence and your landlord. Our guide on storing flammable solvents in UAE summer heat covers the practical side.

Frequently asked questions
Can I mix acetone and IPA?
Yes, they are miscible, but you gain little. Choose the one that suits the job, since the mixture takes on the weaknesses of both.
Is a higher purity always better?
No. Cleaning machinery and tools works fine with commercial grade. Pay for higher purity only where residue or water content affects the result, such as electronics and precision coating.
What is the minimum order?
Small packs are available for workshops, and drums for factories. Tell us your monthly use and we will suggest the pack that costs least per litre.
